Weight Gaining Dilemma

November 3, 2009

Goal. The main objective of the initial stage of the Bear Train Program was to increase the volume on my exercises, gain weight and increase muscle mass. I currently weigh about 155lbs. My goal was to get to 165lbs.

Marco, we have a problem. It wasn’t happening though. Eventhough I’ve been able to progress on the exercises I’ve been doing, I still wasn’t satisfied. Looking in the mirror, I can see that I am starting to bulk-up. But the weighing scale says otherwise. I was still stuck at the same body weight.

This has been my concern for the longest time. I’ve tried different methods and supplements, but still ended up frustrated.

Eat like a bear. I tried narrowing down the reasons that contribute to this plateau. One could’ve been the fact that I was overtraining. Two, I was working on graveyard shifts and haven’t been able to get 8hours of sleep regularly. And three, I wasn’t eating enough.

On the previous posts, I tried solving the overtraining problem I’ve had. I made significant changes on my program to eliminate this concern.

I only sleep for about 7hours approximately each day. I am always wide awake and feel that it’s an ample amount hours for sleep (personally). Doing an 8hour sleep make me want to sleep more which obviously isn’t good.

Eating. I figured-out that I wasn’t really eating enough and/or not eating properly. As the saying goes to be is to do. If I wanted to weigh 165lbs, I have to eat like I am 165lbs. This usually is a no-brainer, but I haven’t took the time to really look at the root cause of the problem.

Dilemma. I value frugality. Period. As much as possible, I try to stay away from frivolous spending. And for that matter try to minimize my expenses always. My goal however wasn’t at the same page as with my caloric intake. I was taking less carbohydrates and a little less on protein.

Caloric Intake. I’ve tried an approach to solve this problem. Instead of lowering down my expenses on food, I might as well increase it a bit. After all,  money in the bank doesn’t really equate to the stresses and frustration I ge.

So, I went to this site and searched for the nutrition calculators available. And here is what I ended up with:

PROTEIN: 240g / Day

CARBOHYDRATES: 320g / Day

FAT: 80g / Day

That’s how my diet should be comprised of on a daily basis. After doing some serious math, I found out that I only needed to add a few extra bucks to get to where I want to be in terms of nutrition.

For those of you having this kind of problem in weight gaining, here is link to figure your caloric intake.
